Care label package for clothing companies

The cost of producing care labels has fallen with the introduction of a care label printer, fabric and ink package from Paxar. The new Paxar 9830CL thermal printer has been teamed-up with a new dip-coated nylon fabric and a new thermal transfer ink.

The package is targeted at medium sized clothing manufacturers seeking low cost inplant apparel labelling. It is being promoted as a one-stop solution with the care tape, ink, ribbons, label and printer all being supplied by Paxar.

The company says the 9830CL is a robust and reliable low-cost-of-ownership solution with the emphasis on simplicity and flexibility, where labels can be printed as required.

The package calls for the minimum of operator training. It is simple to load, with easy flip-up access to the printhead should jams occur. Set up of the software is also said to be undemanding. Extra long care tape reels last longer and a new design of ribbon mechanism ensures the system is not plagued by ribbon wrinkle.

It prints high quality labels on to a wide selection of fabrics available from Paxar. Print speed options are 64mm, 100mm and 152mm a second with labels up to 102mm by 305mm that can incorporate a variety of barcode symbologies, including 2D codes.

The Paxar 9830CL is a 300dpi printer with a 102mm printhead width. It offers scaleable font, a battery-backed memory for format storage, serial/parallel communications ports and a 32-bit RISC processor for faster imaging time.

Carbon Trading – What’s All That About?

There is an emissions trading scheme in operation internationally but many people aren’t aware that this is perceived to be the cornerstone of the climate change policy in the EU and USA.

Firms are set quotas on how much carbon dioxide they can produce per year, if they produce more than this allowance, then they buy an allowance from another firm that has not reached it’s quota on how much it can produce in one year! Get it?

Emissions Trading is particularly suited to the emissions of greenhouse gases, the gases responsible for global warming, which have the same effect wherever they are emitted.

Emissions of carbon dioxide - a greenhouse gas - are widely thought to be a key factor in global warming, and increasing atmospheric temperatures around the world.

The idea of the carbon-trading scheme was to raise the cost to firms of continuing to pollute while creating a market to give an incentive to become more environmentally efficient. This income could stimulate much needed economic growth. They could also achieve their Kyoto commitments at the lowest possible cost as the money needed to invest in cleaner technology can be funded by the trading on carbon units. Countries like the USA and UK could pay the countries in Africa to REFOREST there lands, this reduction in carbon dioxide in the planet would then allow USA/UK firms to emit extra carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. It would probably be cheaper to REFOREST parts of Africa then to buy state of the art cleaner technology for firms in the West. How many trees could you plant for a million dollars/pounds in Africa?

The cost of cleaner technology in the West obviously varies from industry to industry, size of the company, technological advances available etc but surely a company would not trade CO2 unless we were talking big money. Carbon trading sounds a bit strange to me, as you are trading air, but if this leads to more trees being planted and a reduction in climate change – Im all for it!

Still, the lowest valued NFL team, Arizona Cardinals, is a tidy half billion.

Business – Cash Flow & Surviving the 1st Year.

You’ve dreamt of it, you planned it, nursed it and dragged it screaming to the grand opening day – your business that is. Are you exhausted, and well and truly ready for a rest?

Better not be. It’s a sobering fact indeed but over 70% of registered businesses fail before their first anniversary of trading, (Australian Bureau of Statistics Annual Report 2004). And why does this happen?

In the majority of cases, 66%, its problems with cash flow.

Cash flow, or rather the lack of it, seems to be the clear number one enemy of a fledgling business. Firstly what is cash flow? Well simply put – let’s say you make widgets for sale.

To prepare, there was machinery, a place to put it and some staff to help you operate it. There was insurance to pay, licences to buy, electricity to be put on, and a phone to take all those orders … and lots more too you can be assured!

Now you’re making your widgets, you had to buy the raw materials, and dispose of the waste. You marketed them, and spent lots of time answering customer’s questions. Packaging had to be designed and manufactured, and transport had to be organised to get those widgets delivered.

And hey – it’s been three months of hard work, but now you see you’ve sold over 1000 widgets. That’s well ahead of the business plan and all good news … isn’t it?

Add up ALL the money you’ve spent to date. Now have a look at the income you’ve received. It’s likely that the only revenue you’ve received is for the first few widgets you sold way back in January. At the same time, all your cash has been spent making those first 1000 widgets. So where’s the income? Has there been a robbery?

No, it’s the hard cold cash flow devil throwing its weight around. To explain: A large customer ordered 20 widgets from you on the 5th of January. You delivered them on the 7th of January. You sent an invoice for the delivery. On the 4th of February you sent your customer a statement with the invoice listed. In the meantime the customer has ordered a further 20 widgets which you supply in good time. Several other customers also order, and are supplied on similar terms.

It’s March now and you call the first customer to check on the progress of your January invoice. The accounts payable lady is very helpful and explains that their terms with you are 60 days. She says to look out for the check in mid April. Nothing untoward, just normal practice.

The penny drops, your income stream will be delayed by at least 80 days! A few nasty bills come in and all of a sudden, you’re out of business, unable to pay wages or buy materials.

That’s cash flow. A final thought. ‘A force that can work against you, can alternatively work for you’.

Dreams do come true! What you put your attention on does become a reality – the dream of a business created by you is no exception. The dream of owning one’s own business subtly grows within until a person finds a way to let it sprout into fruition. As you look up and down any business street, or on the internet, you can see the truth of this. Few, if any, of these businesses were there forty years ago. Someone’s dreams came true.

Unfortunately, not all of these businesses are as fulfilling as the original dream. While working long hours for someone else as a technician, for an hourly wage, and possibly few benefits or holidays, people often think, “Boy, someday I’ll have a business of my own, and I won’t have to do this.” Then by some means they do acquire their own business and, without some careful guidance, they find they are now working even longer hours and making less money and have less vacations. They have developed into being their own technician.

There is no one to relieve them of the consequences of their decisions and obligations now that they are the boss.

How can one avoid this dilemma? By building a business that functions as efficiently as a franchise. By creating a model business that someone else could duplicate, which means putting each step of each process in writing. By building a prototype. The product itself takes second place to the process of how the business itself functions. The process rules the business, not the product.

Key elements of creating this type of business are: (1) quantifying everything! How many of this, how many of that, tracking in writing exactly what is going on (examples are how many customers call or come in during each hour of the day, which are the peak hours, how many customers turn right after walking in the door and how many turn left), (2) creating an organizational chart based on what needs to be done, not on who does it (building a company around personalities severely limits progress, even if it is ‘your’ personality), (3) be consistent (the same color scheme on everything – the web page, the letterhead – the vehicles – the uniforms – the paint on the walls – the chairs).

Build an image that stays in the customer’s mind. McDonald’s stands out as the prime example of the above. The image is consistent: they know exactly how many ounces of each item can be sold in one day, and which hours are the most productive. The turnover of employees boggles the mind yet the service is identical. And, from a McDonald’s in London, to one in China to one in Brazil, the customer expects exactly the same product.

The new entrepreneurial business with only one or two employees can be developed with the same precision. If it isn’t, the person playing the combined role of owner/boss/janitor will probably remain a technician with a shattered dream.

By working ON one’s business, rather than IN it, the new owner/boss can radiate success, have joyous time with his/her family daily, and even enjoy several vacations every year.

1. If you know nothing about construction then I HIGHLY recommend you hire a General Contractor ( GC ). A reputable contractor will meet you onsite and look at the subject property. You should be able to get some estimates of repair. Make sure he/she is licensed and insured. Get a copy of his contractors license. Absolutly DO NOT try to go into it thinking you get everything done yourself in 4 weeks on a budget of $10,000.00

2. When arranging your financing with a lender ask for an interest only loan for 1 year. Your payments will be lower. If for some reason it takes longer than a year to sell the house you can sign for another year. Make sure you confirm this with your bank.

2. Make sure that you figure your carrying costs into your loan. By doing this you will have financed the payments and be able to draw from the bank when a payment is due. The amount of payments you can include will vary depending on the Loan to Value (LTV)

This will keep you from going out of pocket for a few months. Hopefully the property will sell.

3. When you have received the estimate from the contractor add about 3-5% to it. I am not suggesting that your contractor is trying to scam you. The fact is all budgets (when flipping houses) run over. So count on it up front so you are not surprised in the end.

4. Call your insurance company get the premium amount and add those numbers into your loan. When the payment is due draw from the loan.

5. Make sure you figure in utility expenses. Take into consideration the season and the type of utilities the property has. You may need to add more or less depending.

9. Pick out all of your colors out before you start. Write them all down and make sure your GC has a copy. This is crucial to getting the job done on time. If anything needs special ordered you will know it upfront. Not to mention if you have to be unavailable for some sort of emergency...everyone can still keep working.

10. Allow a reasonable time frame. Take into consideration holidays and weather. Do not kid yourself. Be realistic. Don't expect anyone to work on Christmas day unless you are.

I have had good flips and bad ones. Every flip has had a surprise. With my most recent one I encountered over 200 bats in the roof. It cost me $1,800 to have them removed and I did not have that expense figured into the budget.

Build Your Buyers List

I recently spoke to a few people who wanted to get involved in wholesaling properties. Wholesaling properties is a great niche to be in because if you can find the right leads you will have no problems selling your properties and selling them fast. But before you can sell them fast you need to have a buyers list. A buyers list is one of the most important parts of a wholesalers business. When you are wholesaling properties you want to be able to flip them as fast as possible, and with a strong buyers list organized the right way this process becomes a whole lot easier.

What are some sources for buyers?

Your local real estate investment club is a great resource for buyers. If you are an investor it is absolutely critical that you know the investors in your area and have contact with them. When you meet them find out what part of investing they focus on and take note. Certain investors at your local clubs may not be interested in buying properties from other investors because it is not their particular concentration. But those that are looking for those types of deals are great. You know they are investors so your real estate investment clubs should be your first source for creating your buyers list.

Another source for potential buyers is from signs and classifieds. When you see any advertisement that says “We Buy Houses” or any other advertisement that is clearly from an investor, write down the number. When you get home call the number and just start talking to the investor. Find out what sort of properties they are interested in. Take notes on each conversation that you have and keep meticulous records

One of the best sources for a buyers list is your local section 8 office. Call your local office or visit them and get a list of the local landlords in your area. This will give you a large list of people who are active in real estate investing and are potential buyers. Again, once you have the list contact each investor and talk to them and try and get a feel for what types of properties they are looking for. On a side note, you may also be able to find a burnt out landlord that would be willing to sell you their rental property or properties at a discount. So not only can this step help create a buyers list but you may also generate a few good leads from this easy step.

Remember when you are collecting all these names to take lots of notes. Get each persons contact information and as much other information as you can. One critical piece of info is the email address. When you have a property and you have 100 emails of potential buyers, all you have to do is send out one email and you have reached 100 potential buyers in literally seconds. Regardless of the strategy I am going over next, this is a very powerful way to flip your properties very quickly.

So now you have a buyers list, what next?

The next step that I recommend is to sort your buyers list. The reason you do this is to take away a lot of the hassles you might face. If you have your list separated into an A, B, C, and D list; you will find wholesaling a lot easier. You're A list may be those that can bring cash to the table within a week. Your B list may be those that have pre-qualified for a specific loan amount. Your C list may be those who have not pre-qualified but you believe could be able to get the financing in a month's time. Then your D list may be those who you have no reason to contact because you don't believe they will be able to get the money from anywhere.

However you divide your list up, this process will help out because you simply progress down your list. Start with your A list then your B list and so on down the line until you have a buyer and the property is sold.

I have also found it helpful to have a website where you can put pictures and descriptions of your properties. Tradeshow, real estate listing, data sheet, new product promotions and the likes will never be complete without promoting them via brochures. Perhaps, brochure has its own way of wowing the public and persuading them to participate, purchase or subscribe.

But the most bothersome aspect is the budget. How will you make your brochures look terrific yet inexpensive?

There are various brochure printing processes available these days. The first is the two-color brochure printing. As the name implies, it only uses two colors. Most often it comes in black and white or a monochrome of a color. This is the cheapest kind of printing process for brochures. However, this may not be applicable to all designs. In fact, if you print your brochure on an inkjet or laser printer, the result will be far different from that printed through 4 color printing.
